It may not come as a surprise that, with a new biotech firm launching every month or so for the past several years, the company that’s grown revenue the fastest in the past three years is one that helps fill the staffing needs for life sciences employers.

BioPoint in Wakefield is at the top of the list of Massachusetts-based companies in this year’s Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing companies. Just making it into the top 50 nationally has long been a goal of the company, a desire that predates a conversation I had with them last fall. The company now ranks 49th nationally, but to be number one for the Bay State on the annual list— which just came out this week — is an added bonus.

“Life sciences is all we do,” said BioPoint co-founder Edwin Matos in a statement. “Our industry focus, along with an emphasis on providing the highest level of customer service to our consulting base and vendors, has allowed us to rocket to the top of our niche.”

Matos was one of five partners — others are George Kokoros, Chris Nash, Kevin Pike and Bob Degroot — who all worked in IT staffing previously, and decided to open an office located above a taco stand in Stoneham in 2011 to serve the growing biotech and pharmaceutical field. The idea proved incredibly timely: From $120,000 in its first, year, the company’s annual revenue has grown 5,302 percent to $7.2 million last year.

There were only four Massachusetts companies in this year’s top 100. After BioPoint is Boston-based HaystackID, which grew revenue more than 4,000 percent to $4.4 million last year.
